Tautoko for whānau with tamariki

“When I started with Family Start, I was nervous and excited because I was going to have someone by my side to help me and my child, help me to reach my goals and grow up as a mum. My Whānau Awhina is easy to be around and talk with. I trust her and I always look forward to our weekly visits. She listens well and answers my questions with understanding.”

  • Okooko tipu – Waipapa

Waipapa (Christchurch Hospital) 4 Riccarton Avenue, Christchurch, Canterbury

As part of World Breastfeeding Week 2026, Okooko Tipu celebrates this year's theme, "Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works," by shining a light on the people, relationships and communities that support whānau to nourish their pēpi with human milk.

This moving photographic exhibition features local whānau sharing their unique infant feeding journeys through powerful images and personal stories. Together, they reflect the many ways human milk feeding can look, celebrating breastfeeding, chestfeeding, expressing and donor milk while honouring the diversity of families in our community.

Okooko Tipu is an invitation to pause, reflect and celebrate the everyday acts of love, resilience and support that help babies thrive. Whether you are a parent, whānau member, health professional or community supporter, we invite you to experience these stories, deepen your understanding of the importance of breastfeeding support, and celebrate the collective effort it takes to give every pēpi a sustainable start in life.
