Breastfeeding Friendly ECE initiative

For many, enrolling a pēpi into Early Childhood Education can be a barrier to the continuation of breast/chestfeeding as often this is the first time the breast/chestfeeding parent has been separated from pēpi for an extended period of time.

The Canterbury Breastfeeding Advocacy Services fully supports and encourages breast/chestfeeding through all of life’s seasons. This kaupapa allows for whānau to be reassured that your centre is encouraging and able to support breast/chestfeeding.

What does my centre need to do to become certified?

Certification Requirements

Be supportive of breast/chestfeeding

All centre kaiako and staff need to have an understanding of and be fully supportive of breast/chestfeeding at any age or stage.

Have a chat!

Centres must commit to discussing breast/chestfeeding requirements at the time of enrolment and are happy for this discussion to be had at any time while the whānau are attending the centre.

Provide a safe space

Kaiako and kaimahi must be supportive of whānau breast/chestfeeding anywhere within the ECE centre, at anytime during centre hours.

Have some facilities

Centres must provide adequate facilities for breastfeeding, chestfeeding, or pumping (power outlet, access to a wash basin and a fridge) as needed.

Have it written down

Centres must have a breast/chestfeeding policy or specific reference to breastfeeding in organisational policy.

Know what to do!

Kaiako must be confident and competent in the correct handling and preparation of expressed breast milk.

Safe Sleep Education

Partnering with our Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI) Prevention Health Promoter. There are options for centres to engage kaiako and/or whānau in SUDI prevention education.
